Bradford company's green energy plan would reduce amount of vehicles to and from site

A BRADFORD timber company is planning to switch to greener energy by building a biomass boiler next to its current premises.

Peter Ramsey and Sons Timber employs over 130 staff and is based on the Whitehead Business Park in Laisterdyke.

The family-owned company provides timber to the bedding industry.

The business has submitted a planning application to Bradford Council to install a biomass boiler to its site on the business park. It will use waste wood as fuel for the site, meaning it will no longer have to rely on gas boilers.

The application says: "The company has a five-year succession plan with ambitious goals for the future, one of which being committed to best environmental practice.

"The installation of the biomass boiler will enable two large gas heaters to be replaced and will eliminate wood waste collection from the application site - therefore utilising renewable energy in the form of waste wood already being generated on site.

"The savings related to energy and waste disposal costs will enable the manufacturing business to continue reviewing further renewable projects such as solar in a challenging economic climate."

It goes on to say that by removing the need to transport the estimated 250 tonnes of waste wood from the site each year, the development will prevent 100 vehicle movements per annum.

A decision on the application is expected next month.
