Natural gas boiler plant to reduce CO2 emissions in Louisville

Construction is already underway for three natural gas boilers to replace old coal fire boilers in Louisville.

Officials said it’s all about providing cleaner air for those who live in the area.

“For too long residents in the west end of Louisville have borne a disproportionate burden for the negative impacts of industry,” said Congressman Morgan McGarvey.

As the sun shined down on the Michelin plant, city and state leaders praised the plan for cleaner air quality.

The $50 million investment is being made at the American Synthetic Rubber Company to construct a natural gas boiler facility on Campground Road.

The goal is to reduce CO2 emissions in Louisville, specifically in the west Louisville and Rubbertown.

“These boiler houses is significantly more energy efficient way of producing steam through a modern, efficient, and naturalized boilers with drastic emission reduction, water-intake reduction, and solid waste reduction,” said Michelin North America CEO, Alexis Garcin.

Higher CO2 emissions can lead to poor quality of life and result in health issues such as heart disease, asthma, and some cancers.

Natural gas is a cleaner fuel that operates at lower excess air.

City leaders like Councilwoman Tammy Hawkins said this is a step in the right direction.

“The quality of life is so vital. So that’s important, especially with the air pollution issue that we’ve been having for quite some time now,” said Hawkins, “I’m very excited, so we’ll see if that helps reduce that.”

The project is already underway starting construction this June. The project is expected to be complete by 2026.
